Ultra-Processed Foods are in the news. Again. It was nearly fifteen years ago that Brazilian researchers sounded the alarm about them. Kids there were getting fat, and health investigators wanted to know what had changed in their diet that explained the weight.

Turns out a lot.

UPFs first hit the market some forty years ago, but since then they have continuously evolved. The sheer number of UPFs has grown like bunny rabbit birthrates and consumers have been staggeringly enthusiastic about buying them. Astonishingly, UPFs now make up over 60% of the Americans diet!

Obviously, people really like these products and it’s understandable; they are tasty, convenient, and make for easy, reliable snacks and meals. That doesn’t answer a crucial question, though: what the heck about UPFs and your health?
